Popcorn Addict: Mission: Impossible-Fallout
Tom Cruise has still got it.
Here we are with the 6th film in the Tom Cruise-led Mission: Impossible series. I can't believe the first one was released 22 years ago!!!
Directed and written by Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects; The Mummy), Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his team (Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Alec Baldwin) are attempting to capture black market plutonium from a terrorist group known as The Apostles. However, when their initial attempt goes wrong, the CIA becomes involved (Angela Bassett, Henry Cavill) and they have to redeem themselves.
As previously stated, Tom Cruise is still an action star! Despite some of the action scenes being utterly ridiculous (see the final act), he was able to sell his ability to get an engaged, physically active spy. Ethan Hunt is the ultimate Impossible White Man. As usual, the IMF companions are hilarious and make great companions to Hunt's seriousness. Henry Cavill does a great job at playing a snarky, dark companion to Hunt (but ditch the mustache). Finally, Isla Faust (Rebeca Ferguson) kicks ass!!! Given her a lead in another action film and I'm there.
The film was incredible well-directed. The action scenes were some of the best I've seen in a while. As another critic pointed out, the absence of score/music during the scenes has you very engrossed in what is happening on the scene (take note Fast & Furious EDM music). The scenes are brutal and realistic and you get to see it all. As far as the story, the script was extremely well-done. There are a reasonable amount of twists and turns in this cat-and-mouse game of a movie. There were several points throughout where I was truly unsure of the true enemy in this game. Bravo!
Outside of the comic book films, this will likely go down as the best action film of 2018. If Tom is still willing, I'm ready to see more of Ethan Hunt.
