Popcorn Addict: Girls Trip

Popcorn Addict: Girls Trip

Funniest movie of the year.

I could pretty much stop the review right there.

Girls Trip was co-written by powerhouse Kenya Burris (black-ish) and produced by Malcolm D. Lee (The Best Man; The Best Man Holiday). It is the story of four college friends who reunite after a long overdue Girls Trip when their friend Ryan (played by Regina Hall) is asked to do a book tour with her husband Stewart (Mike Colter; Luke Cage) during the Essence Festival in New Orleans. After Ryan discovers from devastating news, her friends surround her with support and the hilarity ensues between the friends during their crazy trip in New Orleans.

As with most friends, each has their unique personality. Ryan is the married Oprah-esque successful book author. Sasha (Queen Latifah) plays a single tabloid writer who is facing financial troubles. Lisa (Jada Pinkett Smith) is a divorcee nurse and helicopter mom. Lastly, Dina (Tiffany Hadish) is the single wildcard with no plans on slowing down. Together, they are the Flossy Posse--their squad name from college.

The plot was quite straightforward, depicting a fun girls trip to New Orleans and the ebbs and flows of girlfriends' relationships. There was also a twinge of romance throughout with the appearances of  I love the cinematography in this film, in that it beautifully shot the city of New Orleans and the Essence Festival. You felt like you were there even though it was shot at the festival over a year ago! There are relevant and fun cameos throughout that are fun to see.

Although all the ladies held their own, Tiffany Haddish was the clear standout of the film. Her comedic timing and delivering was out of this world. It will be interesting to see what she lines up next. We also had a lovely Set It Off reunion between Queen Latifah and Jada Pinkett Smith--being on the lookout for little Easter Eggs here and there. While Regina Hall had one of the more serious roles, which deviates from her comedic chops in the Scary Movie franchises, she was a strong lead for the film. Well done casting staff!

Overall, this movie will be a summer blockbuster. It is the perfect movie to watch with a group of friends to laugh and have a great time. After the movie, your friends can have drinks and discuss...interesting parts of the movie involving fruits.

Rating: 10/10

Side note: Don't compare this movie to the awful Rough Night. The movies are completely different conceptually and Rough Night wasn't light years as funny.

Did you see Girls Trip? What was your theater experience like? Funniest movie of the year, right? Sequel? Leave your thoughts in the comments!
