Out on The Town: TRAP KARAOKE!
The first time I heard of this phenomenon I thought it was a myth. I have heard whispers of this greatness and had to see it to believe it. And then Facebook gave me the first notification that I actually cared about and change my life: It was coming to Philadelphia!!!
Of course I'm talking about Trap Karaoke. The fact that Jason Mowatt, the founder of Trap Karaoke, thought that making the fans part of the actual concert experience is fantastic. It's only been in existence since the fall of 2015 but it's already a hit across the country.
Once I saw that it was coming to Philadelphia I emailed my good friend and former coworker to come get up on this blackness. She obliged immediately.
So of course we showed up in our BLACKEST and funniest shirts in hopes of making it on their website. We were fueled with the power trap and liquor. We made sure to get there at least an hour in advance because we knew this is going to be a huge event and we did not want to adhere to the stereotype.
We finally get in and grab some more drinks and bask in the glory that is Trap Karaoke. It's times like this I realize how short I actually am. I don't think 5'5" is short but, in this particular case, it absolutely is. So we go to seek higher ground. The second floor allowed us to put our drinks down have a little corner to ourselves and be able to sing to our hearts content. The only con to being upstairs is that we knew we wouldn't be able to get picked for the wildcard to get on stage and perform. Oh well. Shit was still lit.
Here are some gems from the evening:
As we stumbled out into the street at around midnight, we realized we completely skipped dinner! We were more than a bit hungry and still high off of Trap Karaoke that we went to the best late night eats in the city - SILK CITY DINER! I ordered the only thing I could possibly crave in the middle of the night - wings!
All in all, it was a great night. We had the time of our lives. Being surrounded by so much goodness and black culture is really chicken noodle soup for the soul. If you have the chance to go to an event in your city, DO IT! It's completely worth it.
Do it for the culture.
