Popcorn Addict: Rough Night

Popcorn Addict: Rough Night

Bachelorette party in Miami among college friends gone horribly wrong.

We have seen this story in film over and over again. Rough Night (directed and written by Lucia Aniello; Broad City) brought some mega-star power with all well-known leading ladies—Scarlett Johansson (The Avengers; Lucy), Jillian Bell (22 Jump Street; Fist Fight), Zoe Kravitz (Big Little Lies; Mad Max: Fury Road), Ilana Glazer (Broad City), and Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live). Also, Demi Moore and Ty Burrell have small roles. The star and comedic power is all there, so this movie will be great, right?

Not so much. This film is a mess. Although there are a ton of really funny gags, the storyline is quite basic and underdeveloped. The cast was good with the material they were given and deliver the gags well. If you love physical comedy, these ladies do it well. Kravitz and Glazer’s characters had the potential to have bigger (and funnier) roles, but their characters’ story did not come to full fruition. Lastly, the ending felt rushed and could have benefited from a longer runtime. I’m quite shocked that such strong actresses picked up this script.

Save this film for DVD/Bluray. Unless you want to make a girls’ night out of it (have a glass of wine or two first), the film is not memorable. Predecessors, such as Bridesmaids or The Hangover, are more entertaining and have better storylines. It will be interesting to see how Girls Trip (which has a seemingly similar concept) compares in a few weeks.
