24 Legacy: S1 E1
I love 24. 24 is one of my favorite shows of all time. When I initially heard about a reboot, 24: Legacy, I was immediately excited because 24 has been missing from my life. There was some initial pushback from fans because it would not be helmed by Keifer Sutherland, which I can slightly understand, but I didn’t care. I just wanted 24 back in action! Let’s go!
Eric: We are quickly introduced to protagonist Eric Carter (known from his role as Dr. Dre in Straight Outta of Compton and gravely underused in The Walking Dead) and his wife, Nicole. They’re a couple trying to live a normal life and (make babies) after Eric’s tour oversees where he and his fellow Army Rangers captured terrorist Ben-Khalid. Quickly their normal life spins out of control when Eric receives a call from his Army buddy, Ben Grimes, who presents as paranoid, homeless, and possibly under the influence of something. However, Eric speculates something is different. When he tries to reach out to his crew, no one responded (we saw Khalid’s people killed them and their families in the opening of the episode); causing Eric to go quickly into action and send his wife in the attic. Guns come blazing in and Eric is subdued by the captors. As he comes to, the captors are asking about some strong box that him and his buddies allegedly recovered during Khalid’s capture. Eric was like, “I don’t know her” (Mariah Carey reference). As they are about to kill Eric, Nicole causes a distraction and both them are able to take the whole team down! Where did she learn to shoot like that?
Eric makes contact with CTU and tries to draw up a quick plan to hide his wife, which leads him to his drug dealing kingpin brother, Isaac. We learn that Eric had a life as Trey Songz—Mr. Steal Your Girl—because he stole Nicole from his brother back in the day. His brother is super petty about it, but agrees to keep his wife in safe hands. However, his girlfriend is giving a side eye to her presence. This will be a problem later.
With the help of CTU, Eric catches up with Ben; only to find out that his buddy has the box! He stole it for money and jewelry. But after a more careful search, they find a USB drive containing names of sleeper cell folks. Khalid’s team comes finds them, and we get a cool scene in the junk yard. Once they take down this team, Ben is nowhere to be found. Eric gives him a call and it seems his shady friend wants to sell the USB and wants nothing to do with Eric.
CTU: Meanwhile in CTU, we are introduced to Rebecca Ingram, the former CTU Director, and her husband, John Donovan, who is running for President. She was the head of CTU when the mission went down and is receiving recognition for it. As she swings by CTU, she finds a new, underqualified agent (who is related to Edgar Stiles!) and already questioning the decisions made by new CTU Director, Keith Mullins. After she learns of Eric’s team, she quickly springs to action, knowing it is an inside job. Who can she trust? We’re in classic CTU “Who is the mole?” mode. At the end, she has to taser Mullins when he finds out she is logged in and doing an undercover operation. Badass.
School: Yawn. No one cares about this B Story yet. It took away the momentum of an otherwise fast paced first episode.
Highlights: 24 is back ya’ll! 24 started strong—even with a murder in the first 20 seconds! Also, a RIP shout-out to former CTU agent Edgar Stiles. Call backs to earlier seasons put a smile on my face. Can’t wait for Part 2 of this 2-Night Premier.
