Popcorn Addict: Split
Split is the latest movie from the controversial M. Night Shyamalan. I know people have been “burned” by M. Night, but this was not one of those. As a self-disclosure, this last movie of his that I watched was Unbreakable (and Sixth Sense before that). I had never been really interested in his movies—with the exception of The Visit, which I wanted to watch but never made it to the theater.
Split centers around a man with Dissociative Identity Disorder (formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder). He has 23 distinct personalities with a possible emerging 24th identity. He kidnaps and confines three high school girls Unfortunately, I don’t want to say too much about this movie due to spoilers. What I can say is the film had superb acting by everyone and it was a thriller that kept you going. James McAvoy shuts this movie down as the lead! As a mental health professional, I typically don’t think DID is portrayed well, but in this case I honestly believed McAvoy’s portrayal of each distinct personality as it was incredibly nuanced. His acting alone makes this movie a must-see. Of the three girls, Casey (Anya Taylor-Joy) clearly shines as the second lead of the film. Quiet, calculated, and broken, you are rooting for her throughout the entire film.
Go see Split before you get spoiled. If you do get spoiled (like I did, but didn’t completely realize it), go see it anyway. I can’t wait to see what M. Night has in store for us in the future.
